Photo for the new web layout

My designer cum photograper (he says to keep him anonymous till the final launch then got impact), Shuyin and I finally climbed our way into Fort Canning on Monday, for the photoshoot for the new picture... To replace that damn pink one with the cushions you see now!

I am so excited!

Thanks **** (that's my designer and photographer) and especially silly Shuyin for going there also, to help me check on girly things like hair messy, bra can see, etc etc and to use euphemism, be the art director lar!

Poor thing, she climbed a hill for me!

The final picture has been chosen, and here it is, in sepia:

Click to enlarge! So big, it can even be a wallpaper! =)

Isn't it so nice?! I know, boots again... I had other shoes there also, but boots turn out nicer leh... Of course, the final piece will be better than this, because the graphics are not done yet, and it will be in full colour. I cannot wait!! =D

Oh, and the old-old effect is also done by my designer. Teeheehee!

Trivialising crime

Yesterday night I was having an argument with Shan, regarding the Yellow Ribbon Campaign.

I told him I'll be writing my column about how excessive campaigning is trivialising crime, and, once again showing my traits of having a serious lack of sympathy, I launched into of those "If they know going to jail will make it tough to find jobs in future, then don't commit the freaking crime! If they still do, they are only asking for it!" line of arguments.

Shan frowned (it was on MSN but I can feel him frown) and argued that society will have crimes no matter what, and to punish these ex-offenders (I would say jailbirds, but nobody has a sense of humour nowadays) for a lifetime for unemployment for a single mistake is just childish and malicious. He added that they have already served their time in prison, and if they are doomed to be not made useful for society after that, it will only cause far more social problems, i.e them turning to crime again for a livelihood.

He also added rather ominously: You will only look foolish in your article.

Douglas Adams once said that the best way to learn is to teach, because it forces you to clear your mind before explaining to someone else.

Which is true, because I see my friend's point of view, but yet... I still think there is something very wrong with the situation.

Then while explaining further, I realised my issue with the campaign is that it is excessive. It has way out-shot its original purpose, to achieve another effect totally. How much money has been poured into the Yellow Ribbon campaign? I see ads at bus stops, I see a movie made of that issue, I even met a flag raiser - get this - INSIDE Toa Payoh swimming pool!

Don't get me wrong. I know that the campaign IS for a good cause even before my friend chided me, and I agree people deserve a second chance. Naturally, we also do not want ex-offenders to commit crimes again when they are freed, due to a "I'm doomed anyway, I might as well commit more crimes" view of the world.

But there is a good thing, and then too much of a good thing. It seems to me that now, criminals are protrayed as objects of sympathy, are they not? Why should we all go like, oh, so poor thing!, when they did do wrong in the first place?

Which should not be the way! It is not right for people to think, Oh ok, maybe I will rob that bank now, because even if I go to jail, I can still come out a free man, and be accepted by society again, as if I have done nothing wrong! Yippee!

That just trivialises crime, doesn't it?

Singapore has a harsh legal system, and it is working well because Singaporeans KNOW how harsh it is, and think twice before committing crimes.

Isn't that the whole point? Who is to say what is an appropriate punishment anyway? A rape victim will wish death upon the rapist, but the rapist's dad probably thinks a few months in prison is enough suffering for his son.

Therefore, the issue is not about appropriate punishments. It is about knowingly committing a crime, when you jolly well know the respective punishments. It is a package - you burn a house, you go to jail, you get caned (do you?), and you get a criminal record, which will affect your whole future.

You know that, so you know that burning that house is not worth it, and you don't do it!

But yes, ex-offenders turning to crime again, they deserve a second chance blah blah arguments are still very much valid, but please, can we stop the excessive campaigning already? (But Wendy, if it is not excessive it won't work! Ok yes, fine, I've lost my thread of thought)

Why can't we use half of that money to educate the public on how serious crime is instead? Just a thought you know, thought that it might serve to lower the crime rates a little more. *shrug* I just thought, you know, that prevention is supposed to be better than cure.

p/s: Obviously, this article was meant to be somewhere else, but it was slightly too controversial, I believe. So there you go.

Post note: Dumb people are everywhere, so before you start opening your big fat mouth to say I am cruel *roll eyes* - or stupid, or selfish, or self-centred, or not capable of empathy - and that ex-criminals deserve a second chance yadda yadda, go fucking read my article again carefully, word by word, and with a sudden relevation discover that I actually AGREE that the Yellow Ribbon Campaign IS for a good cause, and that I AGREE that ex-criminals deserve a second chance. So stop stating the obvious just because it makes you seem like you have morals. We all know you eat babies for dinner. After you stab them with a Halloween pitchfork.

Oh and also, stating the obvious, and also appearing to be blind, has the reverse effect of making you look extremely stupid. That, we already know you are.

Two Endorsement Deals!

I would like to announce something very astounding today!

After long discussions, I would like to hereby say that I have been endorsed by two companies that I like a lot: Kimage Hair Studio, as well as Voxy Nail Potion.

Hurray for me! Now I get perfect hair, as well as perfect nails!

I've always been going to Kimage for doing my hair of course, and a good friend helped me get in contact with Monica (director), and this collaboration is finally finalised after we discussed the details.

From now on, my hair colour and style will be Kimage's credit (conversely if you think my hair looks awful it's also their doing, but that will never happen because my hair is totally awesome). It will be so fun! I can't wait to try out all the different hair colours and cut some quirky styles. =)

Of course, my current light ash brown colour is also done by them, though this time they maintained my haircut more or less the same (as I had that photoshoot, remember? I had to keep the hair long) except for some trimming.

The results of the treatment they did for me is below, in a separate blog entry.

As for Voxy, I've always been messing around with my nails myself and I love manicures... The problem is of course that I usually DIY, or go to this little nail shop in Bugis.

Voxy sent me an email asking me if I would like to try out their products, and I told them I won't endorse anything that I don't personally like though I have heard about Voxy as they are a big player in the nail market after all (read: About commercialisation), so I would go down and check their store out.

The results? I did something which I have never heard about in my entire life before: Acrylic nails. (Which is something the little Bugis store doesn't provide)

And I totally love it! I've been having it for around 1 month now, and I doubt I will go back to normal nails if I can help it.

The blog entry on the acrylic nails is also below, but unfortunately, I took a great many photos of the Before & After, but my computer went crazy and the photos are now permanently lost. Grrr! Nonetheless, I blogged about it with photos I found on the net.

Voxy does not only do manicures and pedicures of course. They also have treatments, as well as their own line of nail polish.

Those who do manicures often will know that OPI lasts pretty long, but I don't know if it is the acrylic's credit... Voxy's nail polishes last super long too! You cannot even ATTEMPT to peel it off, it is impossible to drop.

They also have this amazing line that changes colour under sunlight. Coolness!

So yes, obviously their services are great (unlike the other multitudes of amatuer manicure stores around, Voxy is serious about this nail business, and their nail artists can make your nails look like anything Ayumi has ever had), so here's my endorsement deal for them!

Enjoy the blog entries. They may be advertorials (as I have promised I will state), but I still think they are interesting. Or at least I hope they are!

Love,
Wendy

My hair is nicer than yours!

Advertorial

Today is the first time I am going to get my hair treated by Kimage! SHIOK!! Monica from Kimage kept looking at my hair, going TSK TSK and looking horrified.

My hair that bad meh?

That's me, on Momo's car for she was driving me there. Yeah lah, very fat around the arms. Who cares?!

I sat down on the nice chair (Funan outlet) and started to cry.

Bah! It is damn bad lah! Monica is right! Girls who have really long hair will know, the ends can never get enough nutrients. The ends are really suay lah, coz they are the oldest so they have been through all the shit.

I reckon my ends have been dyed at least 20 times (in a span of 4 years or so), bleached, permed, and then rebonded.

No wonder it looks awful like this when I don't tie my buns to sleep:

A bit the no sex appeal hor?

But hey!

Today...

And thus the treatment starts!

The stylist painstakingly (because my hair is so damn long and thick) put loads of cream on my hair.

And then the waiting begins... Ah, the price we have to pay for beauty. I read Harry Potter for the 16th time I think.

I was like madly taking photos and I think the guy beside me thinks that I am siao. How often do you get wrapped in a blue towel man?! Of course must take photo what!

After that I washed the cream off, and they put another:

And they put me in the steamer thing!

And waiting still while cam-whoring...

Undeniably artistic right!? Wah! Got depth of field somemore!

And....

*drumroll*

The results!!!

So nice!!! *weeps* I love my hair now! I am not bullshitting you, there really is a difference in the hair texture after the treatment. And to think I used not to believe in them! Admittedly the hair is blown into its beautiful curls, but still nice! =) Took around 1 hour.

Well, the stylist says that treatment must be done repeatedly to get your hair healthy, especially if you do all those hurtful things to it like blowing or dyeing often.

Nice hor? If only I know how to blow my hair like that also.

Oh and btw the change in clothes is because I bought that new dress from Bugis Village so I changed! =)

Beautiful nails!!

Advertorial

This entry will TOTALLY bore all the men!

For those of you with stumpy nails like this:

There is now help! I mean, those are obviously not my fingers, I stole the picture from some website... Poor girl! Shouldn't have bitten nails! Lucky for her there are artificial nails. =D

So anyway, last time I used to think that acrylic nails simply meant nails which are painted on with acrylic paint, but when I arrived at Voxy I realised it was a totally different thing altogether.

It is not cheap - I think Voxy charges $80, and it is this price everywhere because of the copious amount of work needed.

I was damn shocked to know that it will take a freaking 1.5 hours to do the nails!

First, you get fake nails that look like this:

and stick it to your finger tips with some amazing glue. IYF the more transparent part is the part you stick, and the opaque part is the nail tip, not the other way round.

The manicurist will then file it to the length you want, as well as file the sides of the artificial nail tip to your fingertip's width.

When all are glued, the manicurist will then take out a small bottle of white powder, and this is the acrylic, but in powder form! She will dip a brush in some volatile liquid, and when the liquid touches the powder, it will form a glue-like substance which will be applied over your original nails! It is actually very cute to watch, a small whitish blob. =)

And voila!

Good bye ugly nails!

This photo is the most accurate I can find since mine are lost... The acrylic is a smooth white matte layer over your original nail, and, to me at least, it looks totally natural!

And best news is that it makes your nail polish stay on for AGES!

When the nails grow out, like in two weeks' time or so, you have to go for an infill. That's around $40, inclusive of the usual nail care thingys like cuticle pushing and so on.

It is expensive, but well, some of us will do anything for beauty! I think, if you think acrylic nails are too pricey for normal days, you can always do it for special occasions like weddings or D&Ds.

Especially good for people who have bitten nails, or nails that are so soft and weak they can never grow long without breaking. (mine is the latter!) Acrylic is so hard, you can possibly scratch the chalkboard and never achieve that horrible sound because the chalkboard is torn to shards.

Here are some photos of the nail arts Voxy did for me:

Bright hibiscuses for the beach feel!

I love the pink colour - it's called strawberry! And the silver is so shiny... I feel like a superstar! :D

So yes, if you want to remove acrylic, you have to soak it for 30 minutes to get it off. Oh, you can also do it for toes if you want, though my toes are not acrylic.

Feel free to email me questions, for I do not reply in the comments box! =)

p/s: I will update tomorrow with Voxy's rates, but meanwhile, you can still go to their website if you need nail services!

Chrisopher, the love of my life

I was just minding my own business, you know, surfing websites, kicking Cloudy, reading emails, and talking to Shuyin on MSN, when suddenly, I came across something in my Gmail.

Totally unsuspectingly, I read it, and burst out laughing.

I present to you, CHRISOPHER (without the T mind you):
